Sometimes, I get emails from folks I like to refer to as ice cream enthusiasts.

You know, the soft serve folks who only do roadside assistance calls out of their wife’s Honda.

Because they don’t have a tow truck.

Undeterred by insurance requirements, these guys and sometimes gals are dipping their toes into the business on evenings and weekends.

Hoping to make it big.

They’re running calls for what I’ll describe as motor-club clearing-house outfits.

And they’re getting paid $12 and $15 dollars a pop.

Frustrated by the pittance they’re receiving, many contact me wanting help cutting out the middleman.

So they can get calls direct. Through the Google.

My answer?

If you’re not going to commit yourself to your business and get a tow truck, well, in my experience, you’re not going to commit to marketing.

Also, if you’re only getting $15 dollars per job, you most likely don’t have two nickels to spend on marketing.

So, come back to me when you have a tow truck, and you’re ready to commit.

Now, when I tell them this in a kinder, gentler manner so as not to offend their sensitive natures, many times, rather than taking the free advice and running with it, I get pushback.

One instance I distinctly recall is after our call was over, I received what I can only describe as his manifesto.

Telling me how he was going to make his business work…WITHOUT the need for a tow truck.

Regardless of what I attempted to convey, he wasn’t going to give up.

Don’t get me wrong…I applaud his chutzpah (pronounced “hootspa”).

But how many years of your life are you willing to give up to prove me wrong?

Even after I showed him that, in the unlikely event that he was able to get his Google Business Profile verified, Google was taking down fake business profiles left and right.

Because there is no category for “Roadside Assistance” on a Google Profile.

So even if he did manage to slip through successfully, anyone could easily have his profile removed.

I further explained that he’s going to have a big problem justifying higher rates due to his inability to follow through with a tow should a jump start or tire change not solve the problem.

These are just a few valid arguments I provided, explaining why roadside-only businesses struggle.

But he didn’t want to hear it.

Of course, there can be deep-seated reasons why people don’t want to commit, other than a know-it-all rebellious attitude.

One is due to the fear that it might not work. That may have been the case with him.

Maybe he’s tried other things and they didn’t work out.

But it might also be because, when he tried those things, he “Half-A**ed” his way through it.

Or, rather than standing on the shoulders of those who had gone before him, he did it his way and failed. And learned nothing from the experience.

I’ll never know.

What I do know is that if you want help growing your TOWING business, we can help.

So, schedule a call to see if we might be a good fit. https://thetowacademy.com
