To begin the new year on the right foot, I’ve decided to listen to a book called The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson.

It’s full of information to help you grow in all areas of your life.

I suggest you give it a listen, as well.

Because one of the things he talks about is the role that blame and responsibility have in determining how successful we are.

Blame and responsibility are polar opposites.

On the one hand, when you blame circumstances or other people for your “problems,” you’re giving up your power.

However, when you are responsible, regardless of the situation, this is where the fun happens.

Because you accept that it’s your job to make things work.

A blamer believes they’re always right and focuses on the past. He also beats himself up about previous failures or what he considers to be bad luck.

But someone who embraces responsibility takes complete accountability for his actions and circumstances.

He sees life through a lens of gratitude and focuses on the future. Only thinking about past experiences when they can be used as tools for growth.

How many times have you complained about motor clubs not giving you enough calls? How about the competition and their low-ball rates?

When you do this, you give your power to external circumstances and other people.

Here’s what you might want to try implementing instead…and I know it’s not easy.

But, the next time fear creeps in, rather than looking for a scapegoat, ask yourself, “what can I do to make my circumstances better?”

Listen, I get it…this is not a new concept to most of you.

If you are an entrepreneur who’s been self-employed for a while, I’m sure you’ve done this hundreds of times.

The problem isn’t that you don’t KNOW to ask “what can I do…”, the problem is that our knee-jerk response is to blame…because it’s easy.

And when you do that enough times, it forms a habit that’s hard to kick.

So what can you do when you’re not getting enough calls from the motor clubs?

How about working on becoming less dependent on them?

I’m not saying you have to go cold turkey. I suggest you do something or a couple of things that allow you to wean yourself off them.

What might those couple of things be?

Well, how about marketing?

  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Increasing your visibility in local searches ensures you’re found when people need towing services.

  • Pay-Per-Click Marketing: Implement targeted Google Ad campaigns to generate a steady flow of cash calls.

  • Social Media Marketing: Enhance your SEO efforts and increase Top of Mind Awareness (TOMA) in your market.

  • Optimized Google Profile: Create regular updates, ask and answer questions, add your services, and request reviews.

  • Directory Listing Management: Ensure your business information is listed accurately across all directories.

  • Online Reviews Management: Leverage the power of positive reviews to build trust and improve search rankings.

Henry Ford once said, “A man who doesn’t advertise to save money is like a man who stops a clock to save time.”

When you market your business, it allows you to:

  • Choose who you want to work for and say no to problematic people.

  • Scale your business beyond your personal efforts.

  • Create a real business rather than just having a job where you drive a tow truck.

Also, participating in local events and cozying up to repair shops and law enforcement, is a good way to build your business.

Because relationships matter.

But you don’t want to stop there.

Your best bet is to invest in a solid marketing system that puts you front and center when people are searching for a tow truck.

Makes sense, right?

Build your online presence, dominate local search results, and make sure your phone is ringing with paying customers.

That’s how you win.

Listen, if you’re happy with what you’re getting from the motor clubs and only hoping for the occasional cash call here and there, then my marketing system isn’t for you.

If you want to blame the economy, the competition, or bad luck for your lack of success, that’s fine.

But if you’re ready to step up, take responsibility, and transform your towing company into a cash-generating machine, then let’s talk.
